G-203.1 Why MKC
Why choose MKC for smart building upgrades
Efficiency upgrades pay off when they’re planned together. A heat pump needs controls that suit it, an EV charger needs room in the electrical panel, and building automation only saves energy if someone keeps it tuned. We start with what you run now and what it costs to operate, then plan upgrades in an order that makes sense, so this year’s work doesn’t block next year’s. Our mechanical and engineering teams design each upgrade and plan its installation.
Efficiency you can measure
Smart thermostats, sub-meters and building controls show where energy goes, before and after an upgrade. We set up the controls and monitoring so the change in runtime and consumption shows up in the data, and you can see what each upgrade did.

G-203.3 Budget & schedule
What affects
the price
Every estimate is built from your measurements and choices. These are the things that move the number most.
A smart thermostat or an EV charger circuit is usually a single visit. Heat pumps and commercial controls take longer to design, and equipment lead times and incentive pre-approvals often set the start date.
Every project is different, so your estimate comes with its own written schedule, and we aim to beat the usual industry timeline on every job.
- 01Electrical capacity
Whether your panel and service can take a heat pump or EV charger, or need an upgrade first.
- 02Existing equipment
Older furnaces, boilers and rooftop units limit which controls and heat pumps will work with them.
- 03Building size
The number of zones, units, floors or parking spaces to wire, control and meter.
- 04Equipment choice
Cold-climate heat pumps, control platforms and chargers vary widely in price and features.
- 05Incentives
Rebates and business incentives can offset cost, but many need approval before work starts.

G-203.4 Questions
Questions about smart building upgrades
Don’t see your question? Call (647) 637-6052 or ask in your estimate request.
Can our electrical panel handle an EV charger?
A Level 2 charger has about the same electrical needs as a stove or dryer, 240 volts at around 30 amps, so the first step is checking that your panel can take the extra load. If it can, the install is straightforward. If not, a panel upgrade comes first, which involves your local utility. A Licensed Electrical Contractor must file a notification with the Electrical Safety Authority before the work starts.
Will a heat pump keep us warm in a GTA winter?
A cold-climate air source heat pump is designed to keep working in temperatures as low as -30°C. Sizing and installation decide how well it performs in your house. Home Renovation Savings rebates currently reach up to $7,500 for these units in homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood, and up to $2,000 for Enbridge Gas customers heating with natural gas.
Are smart thermostats worth it?
They adjust heating and cooling to your schedule and the season, and in Ontario two programs help cover the cost. The Home Renovation Savings Program offers $125 on eligible models. If the thermostat runs central air, Save on Energy’s Peak Perks pays $75 when you enrol, plus a yearly payment for staying in ($20 in 2026), in exchange for brief adjustments on peak days. Not every model works with every system, so we check compatibility before you buy.
We manage a commercial building. Where do we start?
With the data. Metering and a review of your controls show where energy goes and which equipment runs when it shouldn’t, and scheduling or sensor fixes are often a good first step. Save on Energy’s Retrofit Program offers incentives for equipment and control upgrades with pre-project approval, and its Existing Building Commissioning Program supports tuning up existing systems. Our commercial HVAC team scopes it with you.
What does EV-ready mean in a renovation?
It means the expensive part is done while the walls and floors are open: conduit from the panel to the parking spot, space in the panel, and capacity confirmed by a load calculation. Adding the charger later is then a short job. In a garage renovation or new driveway, running conduit now costs little compared with trenching or opening finished walls afterward.
